**Bitcoin (BTC)** fell below $40,000 on Friday as investors braced for the release of the latest U.S. inflation data. The world's largest cryptocurrency was down 2.5% to $39,600 at 2:15 p.m. ET.
**Ethereum (ETH)** fell 3.4% to $2,900, while **Cardano (ADA)** and **Solana (SOL)** each lost more than 5%.
The sell-off in crypto markets comes ahead of the release of the **Consumer Price Index (CPI)** report for January on Friday. Economists expect the CPI to show that inflation rose 7.3% year-over-year, the highest level since 1982.
A high inflation reading could put pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more aggressively, which could be a headwind for risk assets like Bitcoin.
"The market is pricing in a more hawkish Fed, which is not good for risk assets," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda. "Bitcoin is still holding up relatively well, but if we get a strong CPI print, we could see the cryptocurrency fall below $30,000."
The sell-off in crypto markets follows a strong rally in January, when Bitcoin reached a high of nearly $48,000. The cryptocurrency has since given back some of those gains, but it is still up more than 10% year-to-date.
