A Brooklyn, New York, man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on Friday for his role in a fraudulent initial coin offering (ICO).
Christopher Michael Cardone, 34, pleaded guilty in February to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Cardone admitted that he and his co-conspirators raised more than $1 million from investors by falsely claiming that their ICO would be used to develop a new cryptocurrency exchange.
Instead, Cardone and his co-conspirators used the money to fund their lavish lifestyles, including expensive cars, travel, and clothing.
“Cardone and his co-conspirators preyed on investors by making false promises about their ICO,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Seth DuCharme. “This sentence sends a strong message that those who would defraud investors through fraudulent ICOs will be held accountable.”
Cardone is the second person to be sentenced in connection with the ICO. In January, another co-conspirator, Michael Alan Ackerman, was sentenced to 24 months in prison.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
