South Korean prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for Daniel Shin, the co-founder and CEO of Terraform Labs, on charges of fraud and market manipulation, Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office said it filed a motion for the warrant with the Seoul Central District Court, accusing Shin of misleading investors about the stability of TerraUSD (UST), the algorithmic stablecoin that underpins the Terra ecosystem.
Prosecutors allege that Shin and other Terraform Labs employees falsely claimed that UST was backed by $1 billion in bitcoin, when in reality only a small fraction of that amount was actually held in reserve.
The collapse of UST in May triggered a sell-off of other cryptocurrencies, wiping billions of dollars off the value of the entire market.
Shin has denied the allegations, saying that he is innocent and that he will cooperate with the investigation.
If convicted, Shin could face up to 10 years in prison.
