The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has said that new regulations for DLT would be "premature" at this stage.
In a statement, ESMA said that it is "aware of the increasing interest in DLT and its potential to bring about innovation in the financial services sector." However, it added that "further analysis is needed to assess the potential risks and benefits of DLT before any regulatory action is taken."
ESMA's comments come as the European Commission is considering whether to introduce new regulations for DLT. In a recent consultation paper, the Commission said that it is "open to exploring the possibility of developing a regulatory framework for DLT."
However, ESMA said that it believes that "further analysis is needed to assess the potential risks and benefits of DLT before any regulatory action is taken."
The regulator said that it is "concerned that the development of DLT could lead to fragmentation of the financial markets and a lack of transparency." It also said that it is "concerned about the potential for market abuse and money laundering."
ESMA said that it is "committed to working with the Commission and other stakeholders to ensure that any regulatory action taken in relation to DLT is proportionate and does not stifle innovation."
