The chief economist of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Claudio Borio, has said that cryptocurrencies should be considered securities and regulated accordingly.
In a speech at the Financial Stability Institute's annual conference in Basel, Switzerland, Borio said that cryptocurrencies are "financial assets" that are "subject to the same risks as traditional securities."
He argued that cryptocurrencies should be regulated in the same way as other financial assets, such as stocks and bonds, in order to protect investors and prevent financial instability.
"The case for regulating crypto-assets is strong," Borio said. "They are financial assets, they are subject to the same risks as traditional securities, and they can be used to amplify financial instability."
Borio's comments come as regulators around the world are increasingly looking to regulate cryptocurrencies. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has said that it will treat cryptocurrencies as securities if they meet the definition of a security.
