"It's been an incredible honor to serve as Coinbase's chief legal officer for the past five years," Romero wrote. "I'm proud of everything we've accomplished together, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for the company."
Romero joined Coinbase in 2017, shortly after the company went public. He previously served as the general counsel of Circle, a digital currency company.
In his role at Coinbase, Romero oversaw the company's legal and regulatory affairs. He also played a key role in the development of Coinbase's products and services.
Romero's departure comes at a time of uncertainty for Coinbase. The company has been facing increased scrutiny from regulators in recent months. In addition, the cryptocurrency market has been volatile, and Coinbase's stock price has fallen sharply.
