Ian Gallina, who worked as a senior software engineer at the cryptocurrency exchange, admitted in January to trading on confidential information about upcoming Coinbase product announcements. He was charged with one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud.
Gallina's lawyers argued in a court filing Monday that he should receive a sentence of 10 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. They said Gallina's crime was "out of character" and that he has taken responsibility for his actions.
"Mr. Gallina is deeply remorseful for his conduct," the lawyers wrote. "He has accepted responsibility for his actions and has cooperated fully with the government's investigation."
Gallina's lawyers also noted that he has no prior criminal history and that he has been a productive member of society. They said he has a degree in computer science from Stanford University and has worked in the technology industry for several years.
Gallina is scheduled to be sentenced on June 21.
The case is the latest in a series of insider-trading cases involving cryptocurrency companies. In February, a former BitMEX employee was sentenced to 5 years in prison for trading on confidential information about the company's plans to list new cryptocurrencies.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has also brought a number of insider-trading cases against cryptocurrency traders. In March, the SEC charged a former employee of the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini with insider trading.
The SEC has warned that cryptocurrency markets are rife with insider trading and that investors should be aware of the risks.
