In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Gottheimer said that FinCEN needs additional resources to investigate and prosecute cryptocurrency-related crimes, which have become increasingly common in recent years.
"Cryptocurrency-related crime is a growing problem, and FinCEN needs the resources to address it," Gottheimer said in a statement. "This funding will help FinCEN crack down on criminals who use cryptocurrency to launder money, finance terrorism, and commit other financial crimes."
Gottheimer's proposal is backed by the Cryptocurrency Security Alliance (CSA), a trade group that represents cryptocurrency companies.
"We applaud Congressman Gottheimer for his leadership on this issue," said CSA CEO Perianne Boring. "This funding is essential to help FinCEN keep pace with the growing threat of cryptocurrency-related crime."
The Treasury Department has not yet responded to Gottheimer's proposal.
