### Secret Service Agent Gets Extra Jail Time Over Theft of Silk Road Bitcoin
A former Secret Service agent has been sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison for his role in the theft of Bitcoin from the Silk Road darknet marketplace.
Marcus Sommer, 33, of Virginia, pleaded guilty in February to one count of conspiracy to commit theft of government property. He was originally sentenced to 33 months in prison, but a federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Friday ordered him to serve an additional 18 months after finding that he had lied to investigators about his role in the theft.
Sommer was one of 12 people arrested in connection with the Silk Road investigation. The marketplace, which was shut down by the FBI in 2013, was used to sell drugs, weapons, and other illegal goods.
Prosecutors said that Sommer and his co-conspirators stole more than 1,000 Bitcoin from the Silk Road's escrow account. The Bitcoin was worth more than $800,000 at the time of the theft.
Sommer admitted that he used the stolen Bitcoin to buy luxury goods, including a Porsche, a Rolex watch, and a diamond ring. He also admitted that he lied to investigators about his role in the theft.
In addition to the prison sentence, Sommer was ordered to pay $800,000 in restitution.
