Direxion, a New York-based ETF issuer, has refiled its application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a short bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund (ETF). The proposed ETF, which would be called the Direxion Daily Bitcoin Bear 3X ETF (BITI), would track the inverse of the Bloomberg Galaxy Bitcoin Spot Index.
This is the second time that Direxion has filed for a short bitcoin ETF. The first filing was made in March 2021, but the SEC rejected it in February 2022. In its rejection letter, the SEC said that the proposed ETF did not meet its requirements for “an exchange-traded fund that is designed to prevent fraud and protect investors.”
Direxion has since made several changes to the proposed ETF in an effort to address the SEC’s concerns. These changes include reducing the fund’s leverage from 3x to 2x and adding a risk-management plan.
The SEC is not expected to make a decision on the proposed ETF until later this year. If approved, the Direxion Daily Bitcoin Bear 3X ETF would be the first short bitcoin ETF to trade on a U.S. exchange.
