The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has warned the public against using cryptocurrencies for payments, saying that they are not a legal tender and are not regulated by the central bank.
In a statement on its website, the BOT said that cryptocurrencies are "highly volatile" and "not suitable for payments". It also warned that cryptocurrencies could be used for illegal activities, such as money laundering and terrorism financing.
The BOT's warning comes as the use of cryptocurrencies has been growing in Thailand in recent years. In 2021, the value of cryptocurrency transactions in Thailand reached 1.5 trillion baht ($46 billion), up from 59 billion baht ($1.7 billion) in 2020.
The BOT said that it is monitoring the development of cryptocurrencies closely and will take further action if necessary.
