A federal judge in New York City has sentenced the founder of a fraudulent cryptocurrency defense fund to 7 and a half years in prison.
John McAfee, the founder of the McAfee antivirus software company, was convicted in March of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud.
Prosecutors alleged that McAfee and his co-conspirators raised more than $13 million from investors by falsely claiming that they would use the money to develop a new cryptocurrency called "McAfeecoin."
Instead, the money was used to fund McAfee's lavish lifestyle, including expensive cars, homes, and travel.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said that McAfee's "sentence should send a clear message to those who would use cryptocurrency to defraud investors: you will be held accountable."
McAfee's lawyer, Jason Lee, said that his client was "obviously disappointed" with the sentence, but that he would "continue to fight for justice."
