The bill, called the Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2022, would require cryptocurrency exchanges to register with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and to comply with the same anti-money laundering (AML) regulations as banks.
The bill would also require cryptocurrency exchanges to collect and report information about their customers, including their names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. This information would be used to help law enforcement track down criminals who use cryptocurrency to launder money.
"Cryptocurrency is the Wild West of finance, and it's time to bring it under the same rules as traditional financial institutions," said Senator Warren. "This legislation will help to prevent criminals from using cryptocurrency to launder money and finance terrorism."
Senator Marshall added, "Cryptocurrency is a new and emerging technology, but it's not immune to the same risks as traditional financial institutions. This bill will help to ensure that cryptocurrency is used for legitimate purposes and not to finance criminal activity."
The Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2022 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. If it passes the committee, it will be considered by the full Senate.
