The highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus is extinguishing hopes that the UK will achieve "community immunity" through vaccination, experts have warned.
The variant, which is now dominant in the UK, is up to 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant, which was first identified in Kent in September last year.
This means that it is spreading more quickly, and is more likely to evade the immune response from vaccines.
As a result, experts say that it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve "herd immunity" - the point at which enough people are immune to a disease to prevent it from spreading.
"The Delta variant is making it much harder to achieve herd immunity," said Dr Simon Clarke, a virologist at the University of Reading.
"It's spreading so quickly that it's outrunning the immune response from vaccines."
Dr Clarke said that the UK is now unlikely to reach the 80% vaccination target that was set by the government.
"We're not going to get to 80%," he said. "We're probably going to get to around 60%, and that's not enough to achieve herd immunity."
The government has said that it is still aiming to achieve "vaccine-induced herd immunity" by the end of the summer.
However, experts say that this is now an unrealistic goal.
"It's not going to happen," said Dr Sarah Gilbert, a vaccinologist at the University of Oxford.
"The Delta variant is just too transmissible."
The emergence of the Delta variant has also led to a sharp increase in the number of people being hospitalised with Covid-19.
In the week ending 10 July, there were an average of 1,382 people being admitted to hospital with Covid-19 each day. This is the highest level since the end of March.
The government has said that it is considering introducing new measures to control the spread of the Delta variant.
These measures could include mandatory face masks in indoor public places, and restrictions on social gatherings.
