The United Kingdom is set to start further development work on a potential digital pound, with the government announcing plans to establish a taskforce to explore the possibility of creating a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
The taskforce will be led by the Bank of England and will bring together experts from across the public and private sectors to consider the potential benefits and risks of a digital pound. It will also look at how a digital pound could be used to improve the efficiency of the financial system and promote financial inclusion.
The government said that it is committed to ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of digital innovation, and that a digital pound could play an important role in this.
