**TOKYO, March 16 (Reuters)** - Japan's new Financial Services Agency (FSA) chief said on Tuesday he would maintain a tough stance on regulating cryptocurrencies, while calling for a push on developing a digital yen.
"The FSA will continue to firmly regulate cryptocurrency exchanges and other crypto-related businesses," FSA Governor Haruka Kuroda told a news conference.
Kuroda, who took office on March 1, said he would also work to promote the development of a digital yen, which the government has been considering as a way to boost Japan's payments system.
"We will continue to study the issuance of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and work to create an environment in which it can be issued smoothly," he said.
Kuroda's comments come as the global cryptocurrency market has been volatile in recent months, with the price of bitcoin falling sharply from its peak of nearly $69,000 in November.
The FSA has been at the forefront of regulating cryptocurrencies in Japan, and has issued a number of warnings to investors about the risks involved.
In December, the FSA said it would strengthen its oversight of cryptocurrency exchanges and other businesses, and warned that it could take action against those that do not comply with regulations.
Kuroda said the FSA would continue to work with other regulators around the world to ensure that the cryptocurrency market is regulated in a consistent manner.
"We will continue to cooperate with overseas regulators and work to ensure that the regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies is consistent across jurisdictions," he said.
Kuroda's comments were welcomed by the cryptocurrency industry in Japan.
"We appreciate the FSA's continued efforts to regulate the cryptocurrency market in a fair and transparent manner," said Yuzo Kano, CEO of Coincheck, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange.
"We believe that the FSA's efforts will help to create a more stable and sustainable cryptocurrency market in Japan."
