Erik Voorhees, the founder of ShapeShift, has criticized the BitLicense, saying that it requires "reckless" data collection.
In a blog post, Voorhees wrote that the BitLicense "forces cryptocurrency businesses to collect and store vast amounts of personal data about their customers, even when there is no legitimate need for such data."
He added that the BitLicense "creates a massive new target for hackers and other criminals," and that it "will make it more difficult for cryptocurrency businesses to comply with anti-money laundering laws."
Voorhees called on regulators to "rethink the BitLicense and adopt a more reasonable regulatory framework for cryptocurrency businesses."
