New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking new powers for state regulators to oversee cryptocurrency trading and other activities.
In a letter to the state's Financial Services Department, James said that the current regulatory framework is "inadequate" to protect consumers from the risks of cryptocurrency investing.
"The patchwork of state and federal regulations governing cryptocurrency trading leaves consumers vulnerable to fraud, manipulation, and other abuses," James wrote. "We need to act now to close these gaps and protect New Yorkers."
James proposed that the state create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency trading, similar to the one that exists for traditional financial products. This framework would give state regulators the authority to:
* License cryptocurrency exchanges and other trading platforms
* Set requirements for investor disclosures
* Investigate and prosecute fraud and other violations
James also called for the creation of a new task force to study the potential risks of cryptocurrency trading and recommend additional regulatory measures.
"We cannot afford to wait any longer to take action," James said. "We need to act now to protect New Yorkers from the risks of cryptocurrency investing."
